Dodger decided to return to his own building. He could feel a migraine coming on— one that would only be corrected with booze and a rather decadent evening meal. Perhaps, he could invite Sarah to dine in with him.

She’d probably slap him if he tried anything, but he didn’t mind. He found he enjoyed her sharp wit as much as her good looks. Maybe it would be worth asking.

When he reached his building’s entrance, he found it unmanned. So, he opened the door himself and started toward the skylifts, considering possible menus for the evening— traditional Northern Province or perhaps something more exotic?

His foot caught on something, and he nearly fell over. When he looked down, he nearly threw up. He’d found the missing doorman, and he was dead. It was a grisly thing, the sort of death you’d never wish upon another. A mixture of vomit, bile, and blood covered the floor. The man’s stomach was open as if acid had eaten straight through it.

The doorman had been poisoned.

Dodger ran for the doors. This was the moment he had feared all along. The inevitable moment when someone grew tired of diplomacy.
